"It's a miracle I'm alive," an Israeli guy begs in a hostage video from Gaza

In the most recent hostage video released from Gaza, Elad Katzir, an Israeli farmer held captive for over three months, made a heartfelt plea for his release. The video, disseminated online by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad on Monday, depicted Katzir sharing the traumatic experiences and near-death situations he encountered during his captivity. Against the backdrop of an Islamic Jihad flag hanging from a wall, Katzir emotionally expressed his desire for freedom, acknowledging the miraculous nature of his survival. The video captured the farmer addressing his family, conveying profound love and deep longing, punctuated by emotional moments where he struggled to contain tears.

Typically, such hostage videos feature captives positioned in dimly lit settings, often in front of a wall, with bearded men reciting pleas for their release. The Israeli military has characterized these videos as a form of "psychological terror." The number of hostages in Gaza exceeds 130, primarily held by Hamas, following the release of over 100 during a brief truce in late November. Israel has affirmed its commitment to a comprehensive military operation in Gaza until Hamas is eradicated, all hostages are freed, and the region no longer poses a security threat. In response, Hamas has conveyed its stance of not releasing additional hostages until Israel halts its military actions.

Elad Katzir, aged 47, was abducted by militants from the Nir Oz agricultural kibbutz, with his father losing his life during the Hamas incursion. While his mother, also initially taken hostage, was released during the truce, Katzir's second appearance in a similar video underscores the ongoing challenges faced by captives. In a 2018 Reuters interview, Katzir discussed the persistent threat felt by him and his neighbors from Hamas across the nearby Gaza border. He emphasized the constant danger of being observed by potential snipers and criticized Hamas for prioritizing terrorism over the well-being of the people in Gaza.
