After eight Navy veterans were released, PM Modi and the Emir of Qatar had bilateral talks

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in bilateral discussions with the Emir of Qatar in Doha, marking the inaugural meeting between the two leaders since the release of eight former Indian Navy personnel who had been detained in Qatar for an extended period.

The talks between PM Modi and the Emir are anticipated to encompass various topics, with the recent liberation of Indian citizens imparting a positive trajectory to the bilateral relations between the two nations.

PM Modi's visit to Doha commenced on Wednesday night as part of his official tour to Qatar, marking his second visit to the oil-rich country since his initial trip in June 2016.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi convened with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, wherein they explored avenues to fortify the bilateral bonds.

This visit signifies a significant stride towards reconciliation following the prolonged detention of eight retired servicemen in Qatar for nearly 18 months.

In August 2022, the aforementioned ex-Navy personnel were apprehended on charges of espionage in Qatar and subsequently handed death sentences. India vehemently refuted the allegations, advocating for their immediate release while emphasizing their innocence.

The diplomatic discord between the two countries ensued, prompting India to summon the Qatari ambassador and appeal for a review of the verdict.

Following persistent efforts and high-level interventions, a Qatari court mitigated the death penalty to life imprisonment in November. Subsequent endeavors aimed at securing their freedom, including appeals by PM Modi to the Emir, culminated in Qatar's release of the eight individuals on February 9, 2024, with seven of them repatriated to India three days thereafter.
