Veteran leader Ashok Chavan, who served as Maharashtra Chief Minister twice, tendered his resignation from the Congress party on Monday, marking a significant development considering his stature within the political landscape, particularly in Marathwada.
Chavan, hailing from a political family background, notably with his father Shankarrao Chavan's legacy as a two-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, holds considerable influence in the region.
His departure from the opposition party mere months before the Lok Sabha elections represents a substantial setback for the Congress, especially when viewed in conjunction with the recent resignations of other prominent Maharashtra Congress figures such as Baba Siddique, Milind Deora, and Amarnath Rajurkar.
Ashok Chavan's political journey has been marked by complexities, with his involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society Scam casting shadows over his career. The scandal, which unfolded during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2008, led to his resignation amid allegations of corruption.
Linked to the Adarsh scam, Chavan faced accusations regarding the ownership of several flats connected to his family, further complicating his political trajectory.
Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, hinted at the corruption allegations surrounding Chavan's departure from the party, referring to the BJP as the 'washing machine', insinuating that individuals embroiled in corruption scandals might find refuge within the ruling party.
However, Chavan denied any correlation between his resignation and the Adarsh scam, asserting that the Prime Minister's white paper on the Adarsh scandal did not influence his decision to leave Congress.
Apart from the Adarsh controversy, Chavan's political career has been marred by allegations of nepotism and corruption, notably regarding the allotment of petrol pumps to family members, which resulted in a Supreme Court intervention in 1993.
Over the years, Chavan's family has amassed significant wealth through various real estate ventures, including automobile showrooms, residential and commercial properties, and shares in sugar factories.
Despite these controversies, Chavan's political influence remained palpable, with his net worth consistently increasing over the years, according to affidavits filed before the Election Commission.
Chavan's political aspirations extended beyond Maharashtra, with attempts to secure a place in national politics. While he succeeded in winning the Lok Sabha election from Nanded in 2014, his electoral fortunes fluctuated, with a subsequent defeat in 2019.
Speculation now surrounds Chavan's potential entry into national politics through a Rajya Sabha nomination, as suggested by Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena, hinting at a possible new chapter in Chavan's political journey.
