Veteran leader Ashok Chavan, who served as Maharashtra Chief Minister twice, tendered his resignation from the Congress party on Monday, marking a significant development considering his stature within the political landscape, particularly in Marathwada.
Chavan, hailing from a political family background, notably with his father Shankarrao Chavan's legacy as a two-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, holds considerable influence in the region.
His departure from the opposition party mere months before the Lok Sabha elections represents a substantial setback for the Congress, especially when viewed in conjunction with the recent resignations of other prominent Maharashtra Congress figures such as Baba Siddique, Milind Deora, and Amarnath Rajurkar.
Ashok Chavan's political journey has been marked by complexities, with his involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society Scam casting shadows over his career. The scandal, which unfolded during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2008, led to his resignation amid allegations of corruption.
