India and Ghana have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in 30 years. PM Modi met with President John Dramani Mahama, holding wide-ranging discussions focused on strengthening economic, defence, cultural, and digital cooperation.
Key outcomes of the visit:
-
Doubling of Trade: Both leaders agreed to double bilateral trade within five years. PM Modi noted Indian companies have already invested nearly $2 billion across 900 projects in Ghana.
-
Digital and FinTech Cooperation: India offered to share its UPI-based digital payments expertise with Ghana to boost financial inclusion.
-
Defence and Security: India will enhance Ghana’s defence capabilities through training and supply of equipment, while also deepening counter-terrorism cooperation.
-
Support for Vaccine Hub & Agriculture: India pledged assistance to help Ghana emerge as a regional vaccine production hub and committed to bolstering its agriculture sector to achieve food security.
Four MoUs were signed:
-
Cultural Exchange Programme – to promote mutual understanding of art, heritage, and literature.
-
Standards and Quality Control – between India’s Bureau of Indian Standards and the Ghana Standards Authority.
-
Traditional Medicine – for collaboration on education, training, and research.
-
Joint Commission Meeting Mechanism – to institutionalize regular high-level dialogues.
India also reaffirmed its support for the Global South, welcomed the African Union’s inclusion in the G20, and emphasized solidarity on global challenges like terrorism.
In a significant gesture, PM Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honour — The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — for his "distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership."
