Due to an increase in traffic accidents, Karachi has had 546 fatalities in just seven months

Karachi has witnessed a significant surge in road accidents during the first seven months of 2025, resulting in 546 deaths and more than 8,100 injuries, according to ARY News. Heavy vehicles, particularly trailers, water tankers, dumpers, and buses, have been identified as major contributors to the alarming figures. Out of the total fatalities, 425 were men, 51 were women, 51 were boys, and 19 were girls. Trailers accounted for the highest number of deaths with 62, followed by water tankers with 37, dumpers with 32, and buses with 20. Authorities are urging stricter enforcement of traffic laws and the introduction of enhanced road safety measures to help curb the rising toll.

The city’s deteriorating traffic safety situation was further underscored by a violent incident in the Federal B Area. On Rashid Minhas Road, a speeding dumper struck a motorcycle, killing 22-year-old Mahnoor and her 14-year-old brother, Ahmed Raza. The fatal crash sparked outrage among local residents, who retaliated by setting fire to seven dumpers in protest. Law enforcement authorities, including police and Rangers, were deployed to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. SSP Gulberg later confirmed that the driver responsible for the accident had been arrested.

In the aftermath, police detained 10 individuals accused of participating in the rioting and destruction of property. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and other video evidence to identify and apprehend additional suspects. Meanwhile, the Dump Truck Association staged a sit-in protest on the Super Highway. Association leader Liaqat Mehsud disputed the official account, claiming that nine vehicles—not seven—were damaged during the unrest. He also warned that the protest would continue, with the highway remaining blocked, until those responsible for the violence are arrested and brought to justice.
