Telangana and Karnataka have been placed under red alert, and exceptionally heavy rains is expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for both Coastal Karnataka and Telangana, cautioning that these regions are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall until September 2. The alert comes with a strong advisory urging residents to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities, avoid venturing into low-lying or flood-prone areas, and plan their travel with utmost care to minimize risks.

According to the official forecast, Telangana is set to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall between August 27 and August 29, while Coastal Karnataka is expected to receive widespread and persistent heavy showers from August 27 through September 2. The IMD has specifically highlighted that both states will be at risk of extremely heavy rainfall on August 27, a day anticipated to cause significant disruptions in normal life, transportation, and daily activities.

In its updates shared on X, the IMD warned that intense showers could potentially impact travel plans, public movement, and essential services, making precautionary measures critical during this period. Local authorities have been asked to maintain readiness to deal with waterlogging, flooding, and possible disruptions to electricity and transportation. The Met Department reiterated the importance of preparedness, emphasizing that people must remain alert to changing weather conditions and abide by safety measures to minimize any adverse effects.

For Coastal Karnataka in particular, the warnings issued on August 27 outlined the severity of the coming weather activity. Extremely heavy rainfall coupled with strong surface winds was forecast for Wednesday, followed by very heavy rain and gusty winds on Thursday, August 28. The department further noted that heavy rains are likely to persist in the region from August 29 until September 2, keeping the area under continuous threat of flooding and associated risks.

The weather department also expanded its predictions beyond Karnataka and Telangana, pointing out that isolated heavy rainfall is expected across Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala, Mahe, and Tamil Nadu between August 27 and 29. Interior Karnataka too has been marked for heavy rainfall activity on August 27 and 28. Additionally, very heavy rainfall has been forecast for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and Kerala, specifically on August 27, raising concerns about the widespread impact of this weather system across southern India.

This prolonged spell of heavy rains highlights the need for sustained caution, particularly for residents in vulnerable areas. The IMD’s advisories are not only intended to alert the public but also to prompt local administrations to strengthen disaster preparedness, ensure quick response mechanisms, and minimize disruptions during this extended period of severe weather.
