To improve diaspora services, India establishes eight new consular facilities in the US

India is set to enhance its diplomatic outreach in the United States by opening eight new Consular Application Centres starting August 1, 2025. This move aims to improve access, expedite consular services, and reinforce connections with the Indian-American community, which numbers over 5.4 million. The announcement was made by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, in a video message shared by the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC.

The new centres will be established in Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Addison, Orlando, Raleigh, and San Jose. Additionally, another centre in Los Angeles is expected to open soon. These expansions are designed to significantly bolster the Indian mission’s capacity to deliver consular services, ensuring faster and more convenient access for the diaspora.

Ambassador Kwatra also revealed that beginning August 1, all Indian Consular Application Centres across the US will remain operational on Saturdays. This change is expected to substantially improve service availability, especially for working individuals. Furthermore, several miscellaneous consular services will be streamlined and offered directly through these centres, although some essential services will continue to be handled by the embassy.

The ambassador emphasised that these initiatives are part of a broader effort to strengthen the people-to-people ties that form the cornerstone of India–US relations. The plan also includes the establishment of two new Indian consulates in Boston and Los Angeles, reflecting India’s strategic commitment to building deeper regional and bilateral connections.

This expansion comes amid growing engagement between the two nations and reflects India’s recognition of its diaspora’s vital role in shaping economic, educational, and cultural ties between New Delhi and Washington.
