EPS criticizes the DMK after two police officers are arrested for raping a 19-year-old lady in Tamil Nadu

A horrifying crime has shaken Tamil Nadu after two police officers from Tiruvannamalai district were arrested on charges of raping a 19-year-old woman during what was supposed to be a routine vehicle inspection. The incident occurred near Endal village, where the young woman was travelling in a truck along with two men and another woman. The vehicle was stopped by constables Sunder and Suresh Raj, who allegedly exploited their position of authority to isolate the woman and force her into a secluded area, where the crime was committed.

After the assault, the officers abandoned the traumatised survivor, leaving her to fend for herself. Summoning her courage, the woman managed to walk to Endal village, where distressed locals immediately rushed to her assistance. She was taken to the Government Hospital, where doctors provided medical attention and reported the matter to the police. Her testimony prompted the District All-Women Police Station to register a case, leading to the swift arrest and suspension of the two accused constables.

Senior officials have assured that the investigation will be thorough and that strong legal action will follow. However, the fact that uniformed police officers themselves were the perpetrators has deeply unsettled the public. The outrage stems from the betrayal of trust, as those meant to enforce law and safeguard women’s safety instead became the perpetrators of such a heinous crime.

The case has taken on a political dimension as well. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) launched a sharp attack on the ruling DMK government, accusing it of failing to protect women and allowing the state of law and order to deteriorate. EPS, in his post on X, called the incident “the horrific pinnacle of women’s insecurity,” stressing that Tamil Nadu had reached a tragic stage where women had to fear the very police force that was meant to shield them from violence.

Calling the situation a disgrace to the DMK government and its leadership, EPS urged the administration to ensure that the survivor receives proper medical care, along with security and dignity during the legal process. He further demanded that justice be delivered without delay and that the officers face the harshest possible punishment under the law.

The Tiruvannamalai rape case now stands as both a grave criminal incident and a test for the state government, which must not only pursue justice swiftly but also restore public confidence in the police force. It highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms in law enforcement, stronger accountability mechanisms, and immediate measures to ensure women’s safety in Tamil Nadu.
