Due to suspicions of witchcraft, an elderly man from Jharkhand was made to drink urine by the people

In a disturbing incident highlighting deep-rooted superstition and social neglect, an elderly man was allegedly humiliated and forced to drink urine after being accused of practicing witchcraft in Duna village of Jharkhand’s Latehar district, officials reported.

The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday and came to light through the victim’s son, Brajesh Munda. According to him, villagers held his father, Virendra Singh, responsible for the death of a woman in a recent road accident, claiming that he had caused it through sorcery.

Nearly 15 villagers are said to have gathered and conducted an informal meeting, during which they accused the elderly man of being a “witch.” Following this, they allegedly forced him to consume urine as a form of punishment. The mob also reportedly attempted to subject his wife to the same humiliation, but their son intervened and prevented it.

During the episode, a community health worker, Heena Devi, tried to stop the villagers and intervene on behalf of the victim. However, she was allegedly assaulted and chased away along with her husband. The husband later confirmed that she had been beaten during the confrontation.

Such incidents of witch-hunting, where individuals are accused of black magic and subjected to violence or humiliation, continue to be reported from certain parts of Jharkhand. These cases reflect persistent superstition, fear, and lack of awareness within sections of rural communities.

Following the incident, the elderly man approached the Netarhat police station to file a complaint. However, according to his son, he was allegedly turned away without any immediate action being taken.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vipin Kumar Dubey stated that instructions have been given to the local Station House Officer to investigate the matter thoroughly and initiate strict action once a formal complaint is submitted. Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav also confirmed that police have begun questioning villagers, although the case is yet to be formally registered.

Authorities have indicated that legal proceedings will be initiated once a complaint is officially filed. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked condemnation from officials and residents alike, drawing attention to the urgent need to address superstition-driven violence and ensure protection for vulnerable individuals.

Officials have also urged villagers to cooperate with the investigation and warned that those found responsible for assault, intimidation, and such acts of humiliation will face strict legal consequences.
