We'll remember, cowards: Trump criticizes NATO for not supporting the war in Iran

US President Donald Trump sharply criticised NATO allies for refusing to support the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, describing the alliance as ineffective without American leadership and calling its members “cowards” for staying out of the conflict.

In his remarks, Trump argued that several allied nations were unwilling to contribute militarily despite benefiting from US actions. He pointed specifically to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, claiming that securing it would be a straightforward military task and the key to lowering rising oil prices. According to him, while these countries were affected by higher energy costs, they were reluctant to take part in efforts to reopen and secure the passage.

He further suggested that the risks involved for these nations would be minimal, especially given what he described as the weakened state of Iran’s military. Despite this, he accused them of avoiding responsibility while continuing to depend on US-led operations, warning that their lack of support would be remembered.

In response, several countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada issued a joint statement expressing willingness to participate in “appropriate efforts” to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, their position remained cautious.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that any such involvement would likely depend on a reduction in active hostilities. Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasised that France was not a direct participant in the conflict and would prioritise adherence to international law and de-escalation efforts. He made it clear that France would not engage in military operations to secure the strait under current conditions.

The exchange highlights a growing divide between the United States and its traditional allies over the approach to the Iran conflict, particularly regarding military involvement and the balance between escalation and diplomatic resolution.
