When the time comes, you'll understand: DK Shivakumar downplays the power struggle in Karnataka

D K Shivakumar has publicly dismissed speculation about internal rifts within the Indian National Congress in Karnataka, stating that there is no conflict within the leadership and that both he and Siddaramaiah will follow any decision taken by the party’s high command.

His remarks come amid ongoing political chatter about a possible leadership transition or cabinet reshuffle as the government approaches the midpoint of its term. Much of this speculation stems from reports of an earlier power-sharing understanding when the Congress formed the government in 2023, where both leaders were seen as key contenders for the top post.

Shivakumar avoided engaging directly with these discussions, instead emphasising unity and discipline within the party. He reiterated that leadership decisions are the prerogative of the central leadership and that both he and the Chief Minister are committed to implementing whatever direction is given. This stance reflects a strategic attempt to project stability and prevent internal debates from becoming public disputes.

The issue gained further attention after remarks by senior minister Satish Jarkiholi, who hinted at differences within the party and suggested that intervention from the high command might be required. Shivakumar, however, firmly rejected any suggestion of discord, maintaining that the party leadership is fully capable of handling internal matters at the appropriate time.

At the same time, external voices have begun weighing in. Pranavananda Swamiji publicly supported Shivakumar for the Chief Minister’s post, arguing that leadership opportunities should rotate among different communities and warning of political consequences if such expectations are not addressed. This adds a socio-political dimension to the discussion, linking leadership debates with representation concerns.

Despite these pressures, Shivakumar has maintained a consistent line: there is no immediate issue, and any future decision will be collectively accepted. His refusal to speculate—even when asked about potential announcements around his birthday—signals an effort to avoid fuelling rumours further.

Separately, he addressed governance-related concerns by directing party workers not to put up banners or hoardings for his birthday celebrations, warning of strict action against violations. This move aligns with civic enforcement priorities and helps reinforce an image of administrative discipline.

Overall, the situation reflects a familiar dynamic in party politics: internal negotiations and expectations continue behind the scenes, while public messaging focuses on unity and adherence to central leadership. Whether the speculation translates into an actual leadership change remains uncertain, but for now, the official position from both senior leaders is one of cohesion and compliance with the high command’s eventual decision.
