Berlin: World's largest free standing aquarium explodes spilling 1 million L of water on roads

Around 1,500 exotic fish were housed in an aquarium in Berlin that broke early on Friday, dumping 1 million litres (264,172 gallons) of water and debris onto a busy road in the Mitte neighbourhood, according to emergency services.

A total of 100 emergency personnel arrived at the scene, which is a recreation area that also includes a Radisson hotel, a museum, and an aquarium.

The Aquadom aquarium, which Sea Life Berlin claims was the largest freestanding cylindrical aquarium in the world at 14 metres (46 feet) in height, offered glass elevator rides through it.

Glass shards hurt two persons, and police evacuated the complex's hotel out of fear over possible structural damage.
