Rohit Sharma becomes 7th India batter to complete 17,000 international runs

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, passed the 17,000-run mark in international cricket on Saturday, March 11. When Rohit reached the milestone on Day 3 of the fourth Test between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, he became the seventh Indian hitter to reach 17,000 runs in international play.

On Saturday morning, Rohit Sharma got things rolling quickly by pursuing the Aussie new-ball attack. Even as Australia captain Steve Smith used the short-ball theory and bowled bouncers at Mitchell Starc, Rohit was aggressive. On Day 3, however, Rohit persisted in his assault on the left-arm bowler, hitting him for a massive six over deep fine-leg in the opening hour.

In the first hour, Rohit was dismissed for 35 runs after chipping one right to Matthew Kuhnemann's short cover fielder. The captain was devastated since he missed a great opportunity to score a major goal in Ahmedabad on a flat field.

Rohit joined an exclusive group of Indian batters with more than 17,000 runs scored internationally, including Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He is the seventh Indian hitter to surpass the milestone and the sixth to score 17,000 runs or more for India.

In international cricket, Virender Sehwag has scored 17,253 runs, 16,892 of them for India, with the remaining runs coming from the ICC and Asian-selected teams.

Rohit Sharma's ODI runs have accounted for the majority of his total runs. In 241 games, the right-handed opener has scored 9782 runs. Rohit has scored 3344 runs in 48 Tests and 3853 runs in 148 T20Is (before the Ahmedabad Test). He has 30 ODI hundreds, 9 Test hundreds, and 4 T20I hundreds.

  • In 664 games, Sachin Tendulkar scored 34,357 runs.
  • 25,047 runs scored by Virat Kohli in 494 games
  • Rahul Dravid amassed 24,064 runs throughout 504 games.
  • 18,433 runs scored by Sourav Ganguly in 421 games
  • 17,092 runs in 535 games by MS Dhoni
  • 17,000* runs by Rohit Sharma in 438 games

When he started opening the batting for India in 2019, Rohit Sharma has been one of the team's top run scorers in Test matches. With nearly 1700 runs in 22 Tests, he has been India's leading scorer since the World Test Championship began in 2019. With more than 200 runs, the Mumbai batsman has topped the Test series batting records.

In the first three Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit was the only batter from both teams to reach the century mark. Rohit showed off his improved spin play on rank-turners.

India's performance in the first Test at Nagpur was anchored by Rohit's 120, which helped the hosts win the match by an inning and 132 runs. India led the series 2-0 until dropping the third test in Indore.

480 runs were scored by Australia in the first innings of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, which was a massive amount.
