According to the BBC, two Iranian ladies were detained after a man beat them with a pot of yoghurt for ostensibly not covering their hair in public.
A video of the entire incident went viral on social media. The video shows the women waiting for a staff member to serve them at the store. Then, a man who appears to be passing by approaches them.
📍Why do they think they have the right to punch and kick Iranian women and girls who have no hijabs? or harass them in different ways?📍We have many emotional scars but they made us stronger. #no_to_the_compulsory_hijab #نه_به_حجاب_اجباری #زنان_ایران #Iran #iranianwomen pic.twitter.com/MA6R7b9Lv4— Mahgan Farhang (@MahganF) April 2, 2023
After he finishes speaking, he repeatedly hits them with a yoghurt tub he pulled from a shelf. The shopkeeper then forces the assailant outside of the establishment.
The women were jailed because it is against the law in Iran for women to display their hair. According to Iran's court, the individual was also detained for upsetting the peace.
The arrests come after months of demonstrations calling for an end to the requirement that women wear the hijab (headscarf).
The shop's owner has received "relevant reminders" to ensure conformity with the law, according to the judiciary's Mizan news agency.
In Iran, it is against the law for women to remove their headscarf in public. Despite the laws, many people nevertheless do so in large cities.
Following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman imprisoned by morality police in Tehran for reportedly wearing her hijab "improperly," protests broke out across the Islamic Republic in September.
