Strengthen the "Neighbourhood First" strategy and aid Lanka and Afghanistan

The completion of unfinished development projects in Afghanistan and increased financial assistance to help Sri Lanka weather an economic crisis are two recommendations made by the parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs to promote India's Neighbourhood First policy.

The panel's policy report, which has become a crucial component of India's interactions with the region, also suggested that the government educate regional and international organisations about Pakistan's support of terrorism. It further mentioned that under the Neighbourhood First strategy, efforts can be made to create a shared platform to combat terrorism.

The policy, which was initially developed in 2008 to promote cooperation with regional nations, has, according to the report, gained "more focus and more salience" since the current government took office in 2014.

India was the biggest regional donor for the war-torn nation's rebuilding before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the middle of 2021, with offers of about $3 billion for construction projects. More than 500 projects in areas including power, water supply, road connections, healthcare, and education were part of India's development cooperation with Afghanistan, but work on these programmes came to an end after the Ashraf Ghani administration was toppled.
