Disappointed when leaving RCB: Mike Hesson shares emotional message after team management overhaul 

 


Mike Hesson expressed his disappointment at the end of his term as cricket director of Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday 4 August. Hesson's tenure as Head of Coaching came to an end when RCB chose to undertake a contest. overhaul of team management after they finished 6th at IPL 2023.

Sanjay Bangar has also been removed from his position as head coach of the franchise as RCB has appointed former Zimbabwe captain and World Cup winner Andy Flower as their head coach for the upcoming season.

Under Mike Hesson, RCB was able to become a cohesive team, reaching the knockout stages three times over the years. Hesson took charge of cricket in 2019 and also oversaw a key period in the franchise's history - Virat Kohli stepping down as captain. Despite reaching the knockout stages three times, RCB was never able to make it far, becoming one of only three brands present since IPL's inception to fail to win the title.

“While we have been able to make good progress reaching three playoffs in the last four seasons, we have not been able to win the elusive trophy that I love so many players, support staff incredibly valuable support and fans,” Mike Hesson wrote in his post.

"Although it was disappointing to leave RCB, I have great memories of working with amazing people both inside and out of the park. I want to thank the management for this opportunity and wish them all the best. to RCB and the team's new coaches," he added.

“Finally, to the amazing RCB fans, you guys are so supportive and passionate about the team and you make me feel at home. For that, I thank you,” he added.

Prior to joining RCB, Hesson had an illustrious coaching career with various teams and countries. He began his coaching journey at the age of 22 with Otago Cricket, where he served for 15 years. His successful tenure with Otago saw him take over as manager of Kenya following their poor performance in the 2011 World Cup.

Hesson's most notable achievement came when he was head coach of the New Zealand men's cricket team for six years, becoming the Black Caps' longest-serving cricketer. During his tenure, he led the team to a record 13 wins in all competitions. His ability to turn national success into international success is appreciated.
