10 people are lost as a bridge in Gujarat falls, sending vehicles into a river

In the Vastadi region of Gujarat's Surendranagar district, a decrepit bridge experienced a catastrophic collapse on a fateful Sunday, leading to a series of unfortunate events where multiple vehicles, including a dumper and motorcycles, tumbled into the river below.

The preliminary reports emanating from this tragic incident indicate that a minimum of ten individuals were swept away by the relentless force of the river, while thankfully, four individuals managed to be rescued. The search and rescue operations for the remaining six individuals were immediately launched.

The scene was swiftly swarmed by police personnel and government officials, all mobilized to manage the crisis. Those who were fortunate enough to be pulled from the wreckage and swift waters were swiftly transported to nearby healthcare facilities for urgent medical attention.

District Collector KC Sampath provided insights into the grim situation, shedding light on the fact that this bridge, which spanned over the Bhogavo river and connected the National Highway to the Chura tehsil, had served its purpose for over four decades. It had, however, been subjected to limitations, primarily disallowing heavy vehicles from accessing it.

The unfortunate collapse, it seems, was triggered by an ill-fated attempt by a dumper to traverse the aging structure.

In an effort to address this calamity, the administration had already transferred control of the bridge to the Roads and Buildings Department, and plans had been set in motion to greenlight the construction of a new bridge to replace the old and weakened one, as confirmed by the Collector.
