A five-year-old youngster lost his life after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun. The incident happened when the boy's caregiver, who had slept off, left a firearm in the boy's line of sight.
When the caretaker came home after a night out early on a Wednesday morning, the sad series of events began. He put his weapon down and dozed off, worn out. He was sound asleep when a loud bang startled him, and when he opened his eyes, he saw that the youngster had fatally shot himself.
The 32-year-old caretaker allegedly informed police that the inhabitants of the property had given him permission to keep an eye on a boy and a 17-year-old girl while the adults were away, according to police.
The keeper thought the youngster had accidentally fired a gun, causing a mortal wound.
Although formal charges had not yet been brought, Commander Samuel Roberts of the Gary Police Department announced that the caregiver had been taken to jail. Authorities are still looking into the incident and reviewing all the facts.
Police have requested information from the public to assist them in deciding "if it was indeed an accident or something other than an accident."
