Saket Gokhale, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has taken steps to seek clarification from the Central government regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent comments, in which he equated the Congress party with "rusted iron" and accused them of "outsourcing urban Naxals."
During an address to a gathering of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Bhopal on Monday, Prime Minister Modi suggested that the Congress party, which he portrayed as "ruined" and "bankrupt," had handed over its reins to external entities, including what he referred to as "urban Naxalites."
In response to these remarks, Saket Gokhale has written a letter to the Home Ministry, inquiring about the identity of the group known as "urban Naxals" and requesting clarification on how the Central government has identified this group. Gokhale asserted that the Prime Minister has used this term on multiple occasions, targeting political parties, journalists, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), among others.
In his communication with the Home Ministry, Gokhale described the use of "urban Naxalites" as a "startling allegation" and expressed his concern about its potential impact on internal security. He posed several questions to the ministry, including whether the government has officially recognized a category called "urban Naxals" and if so, what procedures were employed to locate individuals falling under this category. Gokhale also asked for details about the activities of "urban Naxals" and the criteria employed to identify them.
Furthermore, Gokhale inquired about the number of prosecutions conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and other central investigative agencies against members of this group, if indeed such a category has been identified by the Central government.
