AI partnership between Reliance Jio and Nvidia for apps and "large language model"

In a momentous development aimed at enhancing India's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Nvidia and Reliance Industries have entered into a strategic partnership to create a foundational large language model meticulously tailored for generative AI applications. This initiative is specifically designed to accommodate and embrace the linguistic diversity that characterizes the nation's population.

This collaborative endeavor is poised to pave the way for the establishment of an AI infrastructure that surpasses the computational prowess of India's current fastest supercomputer.

Nvidia is set to contribute state-of-the-art technology, including the revolutionary NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and the cutting-edge NVIDIA DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputing service hosted in the cloud. The GH200 chip represents a paradigm-shifting advancement in computing architecture, distinguished by its unparalleled performance and expansive memory bandwidth.

Nvidia articulated the transformative potential of this partnership, emphasizing its significance in the context of Reliance Jio Infocomm, Reliance Industries' telecom arm, stating, "The Nvidia-powered AI infrastructure is the foundation of the new frontier into AI for Reliance Jio Infocomm, Reliance Industries’ telecom arm. The global AI revolution is transforming industries and daily life. To serve India’s vast potential in AI, Reliance will create AI applications and services for their 450 million Jio customers and provide energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers, and startups across India."

This AI infrastructure will be hosted within AI-ready data centers, with ambitious expansion plans targeting a capacity of 2,000 MW. The execution and implementation of this ambitious undertaking will be entrusted to Jio, which will leverage its extensive expertise spanning various domains, including mobile telephony, 5G technology, and fiber networks, among others.

Jensen Huang, the visionary founder, and CEO of Nvidia, expressed his enthusiasm for this strategic collaboration, underscoring India's remarkable scale, wealth of data resources, and burgeoning talent pool as pivotal elements in the development of AI computing infrastructure that can empower India with large language models tailor-made for generative AI applications. He stated, “We are delighted to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India.”

Mukesh Ambani, the eminent Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries accentuated the transformative potential of this partnership, drawing parallels to the significant impact that Jio has had on India's digital landscape. He affirmed, "As India advances from a country of data proliferation to creating technology infrastructure for widespread and accelerated growth, computing, and technology super centers like the one we envisage with NVIDIA will provide the catalytic growth just like Jio did to our nation’s digital march."

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, reiterated their unwavering commitment to democratizing access to advanced technologies. He envisioned this collaboration as a pivotal stride toward expediting India's ascent to a position of eminence in the realm of AI, envisioning the creation of a cutting-edge AI cloud infrastructure that is not only secure and sustainable but also exquisitely tailored to harness India's unique opportunities and challenges in this domain.
