Asian Games 2023 Day 1 Live Updates: Rowers in medal events, India in women's cricket semifinal

On the inaugural day of the Asian Games 2023, a series of exciting events are set to unfold. Indian rowers are poised to compete in crucial medal events, while the focus also shifts to women's cricket, with India aiming to secure a spot in the final and the opportunity to clash with Pakistan for championship glory. Meanwhile, India's men's hockey squad is gearing up for a challenging encounter against Uzbekistan. The day's action promises star-studded performances as renowned athletes like Nikhat Zareen take centre stage in their respective competitions.

It's worth noting that India currently finds itself without the services of their captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who is serving a suspension due to her recent outburst against umpires during the Bangladesh tour.

The absence of Harmanpreet Kaur opens the door for Smriti Mandhana to step into the leadership role and steer India towards the final, with the added possibility of securing a medal for the nation at the Asian Games. India's semi-final opponent is Bangladesh, led by captain Nigar Sultana Joty. The outcome of this crucial clash will determine whether India progresses to the final showdown, where they could potentially face Pakistan. The latter is set to square off against Sri Lanka in the other semi-final match.

Should India secure a place in the gold medal match, it is highly likely that Harmanpreet Kaur will make her return to the team, bolstering India's prospects for clinching the top honours.

India's presence at the 19th Asian Games is substantial, with a total contingent of 921 individuals, comprising 655 athletes (comprising 332 males and 323 females) along with 260 coaches and support staff.

The Indian contingent boasts a significant representation in Athletics, with 68 athletes, while Shooting and Rowing are closely behind with 33 participants each.

It is noteworthy that the Asian Games feature a wide spectrum of athletes in terms of age. The youngest participant, Ms. Greeshma, is a 13-year-old athlete representing Roller Skating, demonstrating a diverse range of sports and talents. In contrast, the oldest participant, Ms. Bharti Dey, is 77 years old, showcasing the remarkable inclusivity and age diversity within the Asian Games.
