Government lifts import restrictions on laptops and tablets

The government has made a decision to alleviate its previously proposed restrictions concerning the importation of laptops, tablets, and other IT hardware, as reported by Bloomberg News.

This decision is anticipated to grant manufacturers like Apple Inc., HP Inc., and Dell Technologies Inc. an extended period to prepare for potential constraints.

According to sources familiar with the policy, instead of mandatory licensing requirements for tech importers, these companies will now be required to register under the newly established import management system, which is slated to become operational on November 1.

The government's primary objective is to promote domestic production while ensuring an ample supply of consumer electronics. The recent announcement of the government's intentions to restrict laptop and tablet imports, which would necessitate an unforeseen license, caught companies like Apple and Samsung Electronics off guard.

However, with the updated plan, all companies importing various tech products, encompassing tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and servers, into India, will need to complete the registration process.

In contrast to the previously envisioned licensing scheme, which expected companies to promptly curtail imports, the revised regulations will not impose any immediate restrictions on inbound shipments for approximately six to nine months, as stated by insiders cited in the Bloomberg report.

Import quotas may gradually be implemented as companies commence local manufacturing of laptops, tablets, and other hardware.

The magnitude of each company's quota will hinge on factors such as its local production, importation of IT hardware, and exportation of such products from India.

It's worth noting that these newly proposed regulations do not pertain to smartphones.
