Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) Mausam Noor and Priyanka Chaturvedi have communicated with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar of the Rajya Sabha, registering their concerns about the "sloganeering" that occurred from the visitors' gallery during the parliamentary session on September 21. In their letters addressed to the Chairman, Mausam Noor from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Priyanka Chaturvedi from the Shiv Sena (UBT) conveyed their dismay at the occurrence of "political sloganeering" within the Rajya Sabha despite the presence of stringent security measures and diligent marshals. They raised serious concerns regarding how more than 50 visitors managed to raise slogans, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into this security breach and breach of decorum within the Rajya Sabha.
The incident unfolded during the afternoon session of September 21, precisely when the Rajya Sabha was engaged in a discussion on the women's reservation bill. In protest, opposition MPs had briefly walked out of the House for 10 minutes.
In their letters, the MPs stressed the importance of a comprehensive inquiry to uncover the circumstances that allowed such a security lapse to happen within the confines of the Rajya Sabha. They also called for holding those responsible for the disruption accountable for their actions.
Sources indicate that other opposition parties may also correspond with the Chairman regarding this incident. An opposition leader revealed that the disruption occurred during the debate on the women's reservation bill when visitors, predominantly women who had come to observe the proceedings, chanted slogans in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, shouting "Modi, Modi."
An unnamed senior leader from one of the INDIA bloc constituents urged the presiding officer to "enforce rules and uphold parliamentary democracy."
Earlier, opposition MPs had united to condemn derogatory comments made by BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri against BSP's Danish Ali. Many opposition MPs wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to refer the matter to the privileges committee of the House.
A special parliamentary session recently concluded, and during this session, the proceedings moved to a new building. Notably, a bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies for women was passed. The historic bill attracted a significant number of women visitors who came to witness the proceedings.
