In a distressing incident that occurred in Undri, a 25-year-old man fell victim to a ruthless online scam, resulting in a significant loss of Rs 3.07 lakh to cybercriminals in September. The unfortunate ordeal began when the young man, driven by his aspiration to secure improved job prospects, embarked on his job search journey by creating and uploading his profile on an online job portal.
Unbeknownst to him, this seemingly innocuous action initiated a complex scheme devised by malicious individuals operating on a social media platform. These individuals, posing as potential employers, offered him a part-time job opportunity, setting in motion a series of events that ultimately culminated in the loss of his hard-earned money.
According to a report by the Times of India, the victim, employed at a private firm, was initially assigned what appeared to be a legitimate task—writing Google map reviews. To gain his trust, the fraudsters even made small, apparently genuine deposits into his bank account. As their rapport deepened, the criminals enticed him to join a group on another social networking site, promising substantial returns on his investments.
Between August 13 and 14, the victim found himself coerced into transferring an astonishing sum of Rs 3.07 lakh through six transactions to the bank account details provided by the scammers. It was only when he began to harbour suspicions of foul play that he took action, seeking a refund of his lost money.
In a shocking twist of events, the scammers, refusing to release his funds, demanded an additional Rs 50,000, falsely claiming it was required to process his refund. Unfortunately, this marked the conclusion of the victim's interactions with the fraudsters, as they vanished into the digital shadows, leaving him devastated and grappling with the harsh reality of his financial loss.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present risks within the digital landscape.
