The ongoing dispute between the Governor and the West Bengal government has reached a resolution, as the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Dhupguri MLA, Nirmal Chandra Roy, is now scheduled to take place at the Raj Bhavan on September 30.
Initially, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had requested that the oath ceremony be conducted within the state assembly. However, the Governor expressed a preference for presiding over the ceremony at the Raj Bhavan.
State Minister Sovon Deb Chattopadhyay, representing the government, wrote a letter to Governor CV Ananda Bose, requesting that the function be allowed within the Assembly. Nevertheless, Chattopadhyay later confirmed that the government had agreed to the Governor's choice.
Subsequently, Roy shared that he had received an official invitation from the Governor's House for the oath-taking event scheduled for Saturday. He stated, "I will be leaving for Kolkata tomorrow. I will meet our Parliamentary affairs minister first, then it will be decided accordingly."
Roy emerged victorious in the Dhupguri assembly seat by-election in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district earlier this month.
In a previous interview, Roy highlighted that he views this matter as a "very simple" one. He noted that it is customary for an MLA elected through a by-election to take the oath in the Assembly, administered by the speaker. Roy mentioned that this had occurred twice during the tenure of both the Left government and the current government, and he had never observed an MLA taking the oath at the Governor's residence.
