The prospective relocation of the Asia Cup 2023 Final and Super-4 matches from their initially designated location in Colombo to Pallekele is currently under contemplation primarily due to the looming threat of persistent rainfall.
In addition to Colombo, Dambulla has also emerged as a potential alternative venue for hosting the Super-4 matches and the highly anticipated final showdown. However, it is worth noting that Pallekele holds a strong preference as the favored choice for hosting these pivotal matches. This inclination towards Pallekele arises from the meteorological forecasts, as the weather department has forecasted a sustained period of rainfall in Colombo over the forthcoming days. Consequently, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is deliberating the feasibility of relocating the matches to either Pallekele or Dambulla in order to circumvent the adverse weather conditions.
The impetus for this consideration stemmed from the recent India-Pakistan match, which regrettably concluded without a result due to inclement weather conditions. This forced ACC to reevaluate its plans for the impending Super-4 matches and the grand final. Lahore has been designated as the host city for the inaugural Super-4 match, while the remaining five matches, along with the final scheduled for September 17, were initially intended to take place in Colombo.
The 2023 Asia Cup follows a unique hybrid model, with Pakistan hosting four matches and Sri Lanka hosting nine. Following the group stage, the top two teams from Group A and Group B will advance to the Super-4 stage, where they will engage in another round-robin competition. The two leading teams from the Super-4 stage will ultimately clash in the grand final scheduled for September 17.
The India-Pakistan encounter was thwarted by rain in Pallekele on a Saturday, leading to the teams sharing points. However, Pakistan secured a place in the Super 4 thanks to their victory over Nepal in the initial match of the 2023 Asia Cup on August 30.
Pakistan has left a mark of distinction in the Asia Cup 2023, showcasing its multifaceted prowess. They demonstrated their all-around capabilities against Asia Cup debutants Nepal and displayed remarkable bowling proficiency against India. Pakistan successfully restricted India to a total of 266 runs in 48.5 overs, achieving the distinction of being the first team in the Asia Cup to dismiss all 10 opposition batsmen with pacers.
The Super 4 stage is scheduled to commence on September 6, with Pakistan embarking on their journey to Lahore for their first Super 4 match. The group stage is set to conclude on September 5, and India's upcoming pivotal clash against Nepal is slated for Monday, September 4, in Pallekele, a match that is almost imperative for India to secure victory.
