More than 175 different organizations spanning the entire state of Karnataka have come forward to pledge their unwavering support for the upcoming Bengaluru Bandh scheduled for Tuesday. These organizations have expressed their solidarity with the farmer groups who are actively engaged in protests, voicing their concerns and grievances. The primary point of contention revolves around the release of Cauvery water to the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, a matter that has stirred considerable unrest within the agricultural community.
The impending bandh, orchestrated by farmer groups and pro-Kannada organizations, is anticipated to bring the bustling city of Bengaluru to a virtual standstill. The immense outpouring of support from over 175 statewide entities signifies the gravity of the issue at hand. Their collective stance emphasizes their alignment with the protesting farmer groups, further reinforcing their commitment to the cause.
It is noteworthy that this wave of support extends beyond civil society, as opposition political parties have also thrown their weight behind the bandh. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, acknowledging the significance of this protest, has unequivocally stated that the government will not intervene to obstruct it. Consequently, there is a high probability that the bandh will have a comprehensive and far-reaching impact.
Anticipating the effects of the bandh, various services and institutions are expected to be disrupted. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) are likely to experience service interruptions due to the support extended by their respective staff and workers federation. Additionally, Ola, Uber, and other private cab services are expected to suspend operations, as the Drivers and Owners Association President, Tanveer Pasha, has formally announced their support for the bandh, citing unwavering commitment to the issues of land, language, and water.
While some private schools have signaled their support by encouraging students to wear black bands as a symbol of solidarity, the declaration of a holiday for many schools and colleges remains pending. Decisions regarding this matter are expected to be finalized today.
Conversely, certain services are poised to remain unaffected by the bandh. Namma Metro, operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, will continue its services without any disruptions on any of its lines throughout the city. Emergency services, including ambulances, pharmaceutical vehicles, and essential goods transport vehicles, will operate as usual to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens. Hospitals and medical stores will also maintain their regular operations, providing critical healthcare services.
Furthermore, the availability of cabs and the continued operation of restaurants are expected to be upheld, as both cab and restaurant associations have opted out of participating in the Bengaluru Bandh, a decision made evident on Monday. This choice ensures that essential transportation and dining options will remain accessible to the public during the course of the bandh.
