"Be prepared," an expert advises as the Nepal earthquake shakes Delhi-NCR


Within the span of a single month, Nepal has been rocked by yet another powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. The seismic ripples of this event extended far and wide, with significant tremors reverberating through northern India, encompassing regions like Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. In response to this unsettling recurrence, a seismologist has issued a cautionary note, urging people to remain vigilant and adequately prepared for any potential seismic activity, especially since the earthquake's epicenter was situated within a geographical zone classified as an "actively energy-releasing sector."

Ajay Paul, an esteemed seismologist with previous affiliations at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, provided critical insights into the seismic occurrence that unfolded on that fateful Friday. Notably, he disclosed that the epicenter of this recent earthquake was closely located in Nepal's Doti district. It's worth noting that a 6.3 magnitude earthquake had already shaken the district back in November 2022, resulting in the unfortunate loss of six lives.

Paul further elaborated on the seismic history of the region, pointing out that the series of earthquakes that struck Nepal on October 3, occurring in rapid succession, were also concentrated around the same general area. Although their locations were primarily situated within the central belt of Nepal, they deviated slightly to the west, according to Paul's expert analysis.

The urgency of Paul's message is clear: individuals residing in these seismic-prone regions must remain vigilant and constantly prepared for the possibility of further earthquakes. The unpredictable nature of these seismic events underscores the importance of readiness and awareness.

It's crucial to recognize that numerous scientists have been sounding the alarm about the potential for a major earthquake in the Himalayan region, emphasizing that such an event could occur "anytime." This heightened risk arises from the ongoing geological dynamic where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate as it continues its northward movement.

The majestic Himalayas themselves were formed through this intricate and protracted process, as the Indian Plate steadily advanced northward over the course of 40-50 million years, ultimately converging with the Eurasian Plate. The resultant geological pressure beneath the Himalayas, generated by the Indian plate's relentless northward thrust, has prompted concerns of an impending release of stress through one or possibly a sequence of major earthquakes, with a potential magnitude exceeding eight on the Richter Scale, as posited by experts.

Nevertheless, it remains a complex challenge to predict the precise timing of such a significant seismic event, given the inherent unpredictability of geological processes. Hence, the region finds itself in a state of perpetual vigilance, with ongoing research and monitoring being vital components in safeguarding against the potential impact of these natural phenomena.
