Chennai experienced heavy rainfall, which, in turn, caused significant waterlogging issues and resultant traffic congestion in various parts of the city. This downpour, contrary to the initial forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), brought about unforeseen challenges.
As per the IMD's earlier predictions, Chennai was expected to receive light to moderate rainfall on the specified day. However, this precipitation exceeded expectations and resulted in widespread inundation and traffic snarls across different localities.
The root cause of this unexpected deluge was attributed to a cyclonic circulation formation over Sri Lanka and its surrounding regions, which consequently led to rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu, with Chennai being notably affected.
In response to the impending rainfall, the authorities took proactive measures by deploying as many as 12 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams across various districts of Tamil Nadu. This preemptive deployment aimed at mitigating the potential impacts of the anticipated rain.
Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran disclosed that the government had appointed monitoring officers in 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation, as well as in other districts, to closely oversee the evolving situation and facilitate necessary assistance.
Social media served as a platform for residents to share their experiences, with numerous individuals posting videos and images depicting the waterlogged streets and major roadways in prime areas of Chennai. In one such post, a user highlighted the adverse effects of inadequate rainwater drainage by Chennai Metro Rail, which had a detrimental impact on vehicles and commuters.
Furthermore, another social media user reported exceptionally heavy rain conditions along the Velachery Main Road, extending from Saidapet to Velachery, emphasizing the challenging conditions faced by residents and travelers due to the intense downpour.
These unforeseen weather developments underscore the importance of effective urban planning and drainage systems to cope with excessive rainfall and minimize its impact on daily life.
