The daughter of Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina will lead WHO's South-East Asia area


Saima Wazed, renowned as the daughter of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and an accomplished mental health expert, has received a nomination for the role of the upcoming regional director within the Southeast Asia region of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya, a distinguished WHO official representing Nepal, stood as the other candidate during the nomination process.

The member states convened in a closed meeting during the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the South-East Asia Region, where they collectively voted to endorse the nomination of Saima Wazed for this esteemed position.

It's important to note that this nomination will be presented to the WHO Executive Board during its 154th session, a forthcoming event scheduled to transpire from January 22 to 27 in the year 2024, hosted in Geneva, Switzerland. Subsequent to this process, Saima Wazed is anticipated to assume her responsibilities in the capacity of regional director on February 1, 2024.
