A devastating shipwreck off the coast of Libya claimed the lives of 61 migrants, including women and children, in what has been described as a "tragic" incident, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya on the social media platform X on Saturday.
Survivors recounted that the ill-fated boat, carrying approximately 86 people, set sail from the Libyan city of Zwara.
It is worth noting that the central Mediterranean route remains one of the most perilous migration pathways globally.
Both Libya and Tunisia stand out as significant departure points for migrants aspiring to reach Europe through Italy. According to the United Nations refugee agency, over 153,000 migrants have arrived in Italy this year, originating from Tunisia and Libya.
