A native of Assam was detained in Kochi, Kerala, after raping a 52-year-old woman

Four days ago in Kochi, Kerala, law enforcement authorities took into custody an individual hailing from Assam, identified as Firdous, on charges of allegedly raping a 52-year-old woman and inflicting serious injuries on her, as reported by officials on Saturday.

The distressing incident occurred on December 13, when the accused, Firdous, reportedly enticed the woman, a resident of Alappuzha district employed as a daily wage laborer at a Kochi railway station. Under the guise of guiding her to the nearest metro station, Firdous, and the woman ventured toward an isolated area near a railway overbridge. There, according to the police, Firdous allegedly forcibly pushed the woman into the bushes, subjected her to a brutal sexual assault, and then hastily fled the scene.

Subsequently, local residents discovered the survivor in an injured state and promptly transported her to a hospital for medical attention, the police disclosed.

Despite having limited information about the accused, diligent investigative efforts, including gathering statements from the survivor and conducting a thorough inquiry, facilitated the identification and apprehension of Firdous, as conveyed by a police spokesperson. Notably, Firdous, aged 32 and originally from Assam, is reported to be fluent in Malayalam, the language spoken by the survivor.

Remarkably, the accused chose to remain in Kochi following the reprehensible incident and was eventually apprehended by law enforcement on Saturday, according to the police spokesperson.

A formal rape case has been registered against Firdous, and the authorities are actively engaged in an ongoing investigation to gather additional evidence and insights into the circumstances surrounding the distressing incident. The commitment to pursuing justice in this case remains a priority for the Kerala police.
