Pallavi Chilka, a research scholar engaged in postdoctoral research within the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur, was discovered hanging from a fan in her hostel room on Tuesday.
This tragic incident unfolded when a member of the cleaning staff attempted to reach Chilka late in the afternoon, encountering no response to the knock on her door. Upon peering inside, the staff member made the distressing discovery of Chilka's lifeless body suspended from the fan.
The police, upon reaching the scene, encountered a locked door to Pallavi Chilka's room, necessitating intervention to gain access. Subsequently, they found her hanging in the room. A forensic team initiated an investigation at the site to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Chilka's untimely demise.
In a statement, IIT Kanpur expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Dr. Chilka as a brilliant and promising young researcher. The institute highlighted that the forensic team is actively working to determine the cause of her tragic death.
