Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government, condemning the suspension of a record 141 Opposition MPs during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. Kharge, in a tweet, asserted that these MPs were suspended while articulating their demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security breach incident in the Lok Sabha on December 13.
Accusing the BJP of aiming to establish a "single-party rule" by sidelining Opposition MPs, Kharge criticized the government for evading accountability and depriving the Opposition lawmakers of their democratic rights. He expressed concern over the government's approach, emphasizing that the suspension of MPs amounts to undermining democracy.
In his message on X, Kharge raised questions about the absence of an investigation into the role of BJP MP Pratap Simha, who reportedly issued a visitors' pass to one of the individuals involved in breaching the Lok Sabha chamber. He pointed out the lack of accountability for senior officers responsible for parliamentary security and emphasized that heads should have rolled by now. Kharge highlighted the apparent planning involved in the security lapse, urging accountability for the massive intelligence failure.
Kharge also questioned the effectiveness of the multi-layered security in Parliament, expressing disbelief that two intruders managed to hide yellow gas canisters in their shoes and reach the inner sanctum of India's democracy.
On a different note, former Congressman and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal took a sarcastic dig at Prime Minister Modi, suggesting that Modi's guarantee is an "Opposition-free India."
As the Congress and other Opposition parties continue to protest against the suspension of their MPs, disrupting Parliament proceedings, their primary demand remains a statement from the Home Minister regarding the security breach issue.
