Counterterrorism does not entail "flattening Gaza," according to Emmanuel Macron

On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron voiced his stance on the situation in Gaza, particularly in response to Israel's actions following an unprecedented attack by Hamas militants on October 7. Macron underscored the importance of distinguishing between the fight against terrorism and the impact on the civilian population in Gaza, cautioning against an approach that involves "flattening Gaza." He expressed deep concern about the indiscriminate targeting of civilians and emphasized the need to uphold the equal value of all lives.

While acknowledging Israel's right to defend itself and combat terrorism, Macron urged a reconsideration of the response, citing the disproportionate impact on civilian populations. He called for Israel to halt its current course of action, emphasizing that all lives should be treated with the same value, regardless of the context. Macron's statement reflected France's commitment to promoting a more measured and humanitarian approach to conflicts, advocating for the protection of civilians.

The ongoing conflict, triggered by the October 7 attack by Hamas, has led to a significant loss of life, predominantly among civilians. In response to the escalating violence, Macron appealed for a truce that would pave the way for a humanitarian cease-fire, underscoring the need for international efforts to mitigate the human toll of the conflict in Gaza.
