Following a security breach, opposition MPs demand "airport-style security" in Parliament

In the aftermath of the security breach in the Lok Sabha, Opposition Members of Parliament expressed the imperative need for the implementation of "airport-style security measures" within the Parliament premises. This demand emerged during the all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in response to the security lapse. Opposition MPs underscored the necessity for a robust security framework comparable to airport security protocols.

During the meeting, Opposition MPs highlighted concerns about the two individuals, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, who intruded into the chambers while carrying gas canisters. Notably, these individuals exceeded their allotted time in the visitor's gallery, which was scheduled from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm. According to the MPs, the accused managed to stay an additional half-hour beyond the allocated time, a significant breach considering the standard protocol of asking visitors to vacate the gallery five minutes before the end of their allotted time.

In response to these security lapses, the Speaker took immediate measures, temporarily suspending visitor gallery passes. Discussions were initiated to maintain an empty first row in the gallery, reserving seating for visitors from the second row onwards.

Assuring the MPs of his commitment to Parliament's security, Speaker Om Birla informed them of his ongoing communication with the Delhi police. In addressing the shortage of security personnel, the Opposition MPs advocated for the deployment of at least 150 additional personnel. Furthermore, they proposed the establishment of a separate entry gate for MPs to alleviate congestion and chaos currently experienced at the 'Makar Dwar,' which is currently used by MPs, guests, and Parliament staff.

Effective Thursday, it was decided that 'Makar Dwar' would be exclusively designated for the use of MPs. During the meeting, leaders from the Opposition INDIA bloc raised concerns about BJP MP Pratap Simha, who issued the visitor pass for Sagar Sharma. They called for action against Simha, drawing attention to the expulsion of Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra for what they deemed as a comparatively minor offense related to a password.

Furthermore, the Opposition leaders observed that the two intruders who jumped from the visitor's gallery displayed signs of training, evident in their agile movements. The incident was captured in a video that depicted the parliamentarians intervening and restraining one of the intruders.

Concurrently, the Lok Sabha incident coincided with a protest outside Parliament premises, where individuals identified as Neelam and Anmol demonstrated by carrying cans emitting yellowish smoke. The police subsequently detained all four individuals involved in these incidents.
