Indian student discovered dead in London Lake after going AWOL with buddies for the evening

The body of Gurashman Singh Bhatia, a 23-year-old Indian student who had been reported missing after a night out with friends on December 14, was discovered in a lake in Canary Wharf, east London. The Metropolitan Police, engaged in extensive investigations, including CCTV analysis, witness interviews, and scrutiny of phone and financial data, announced that they are seeking information to reconstruct Bhatia's final movements.

The discovery occurred during water searches in the South Quay area, where police divers recovered the body. Bhatia, pursuing an MSc in Digital Finance at Loughborough University, was remembered by BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and the case was brought to the attention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Detective Chief Superintendent (DCI) James Conway, overseeing local policing in the Tower Hamlets area of Canary Wharf, emphasized that Bhatia's death, though considered unexpected, showed no signs of suspicious circumstances. The investigation aims to confirm this, and a CCTV image of Bhatia before his disappearance was released to encourage anyone with information to come forward.

Conway expressed condolences to Gurashman's family and friends, acknowledging the tragic outcome of the missing persons inquiry. Unfortunately, this incident follows the discovery of another deceased Indian student, Mitkumar Patel, aged 23, in the River Thames near Canary Wharf in November, adding to concerns about the safety and well-being of Indian students in the UK.
