As of now, Maharashtra has documented a total of 29 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron. On Sunday, the state reported an additional 19 cases of the JN.1 variant, with Pune registering the highest number of instances. Before this recent update, Maharashtra had identified 10 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant, with infections detected in cities like Thane, Pune, and Akola, as well as in Pune and Sindhudurg districts. With the emergence of these 19 new cases, the cumulative count of the JN.1 variant in the state has risen to 29.
The JN.1 strain is an offshoot of the BA.2.86 Covid variant, also recognized as Pirola, which originated from the Omicron lineage. The initial case of the JN.1 variant was identified in a 79-year-old woman in Kerala.
Concurrently, India recorded 841 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, marking the highest daily increase in the past seven months, as reported by the Union Health Ministry. In response to the surge in virus cases, the Central Government issued an advisory to states, urging them to implement public health measures before the upcoming festive season.
The advisory specifically instructed states to actively monitor and report influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness cases on a district-wise basis across all health facilities. Additionally, states were directed to consistently update these details in the Integrated Health Information Platform and ensure comprehensive testing measures in all districts. This strategic approach aims to enhance public health surveillance and response capabilities amid the evolving dynamics of the pandemic.
