The Indian Navy has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a suspected drone strike targeting the Mangalore-bound cargo vessel, MV Chem Pluto, in the Arabian Sea. The vessel, flagged under Liberia and carrying crude oil cargo from Al Jubail port in Saudi Arabia to New Mangalore port, is currently en route to Mumbai. The incident occurred approximately 217 nautical miles from Porbandar, prompting immediate action by the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.
On December 23, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported a drone "attack" on MV Chem Pluto, which has around 20 Indian crew members. Despite the drone strike, there were no reported casualties on board. In response to the incident, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard swiftly deployed their assets, including a warship and maritime patrol aircraft.
The Navy has dispatched the INS Mormugao, a stealth guided-missile destroyer, to the location of the drone strike. This warship is actively engaged in examining various details related to the attack, seeking to unravel the origin and nature of the strike. Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Vikram is providing security to MV Chem Pluto as it proceeds towards Mumbai.
This development comes against the backdrop of rising concerns about maritime security, with the incident being subject to a sensitive investigation due to its nature. The deployment of naval assets and the launch of a thorough investigation underscore the seriousness with which Indian authorities are treating the suspected drone strike.
As MV Chem Pluto makes its way to Mumbai, the Indian Coast Guard is closely monitoring the situation. The vessel is reported to be undertaking damage assessment and repairs on its power generation systems. Due to steering issues, the ship has sought escort assistance, and the Indian Coast Guard Ship Vikram will be ensuring its safe passage.
This incident follows the recent trend of Houthi rebels conducting attacks on ships in the Red Sea amid regional conflicts. The investigation aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the drone strike and assess any potential security threats to maritime activities in the region. The collaboration between the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard reflects the nation's commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and ensuring the security of its vessels operating in international waters.
