A year ago, Russian forces withdrew from positions on the western bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region, only to persistently shell areas from newly established positions on the eastern bank. The repercussions of this strategy were evident on Saturday when waves of Russian shelling and drone attacks targeted the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and injuring seven others, according to regional officials.
In a parallel event, Russian forces targeted a power station near the front lines in eastern Ukraine, causing injuries to five workers and causing a power outage in the town of Kurakhovo.
Despite the Russian withdrawal from the western bank of the Dnipro River, Ukrainian troops successfully established beachheads on the eastern bank, prompting ongoing clashes in the region. Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported a drone attack in the town of Stanislav, southeast of Kherson, resulting in the death of a resident. Although Kherson has been under Ukrainian control for the past year, it remains a target of relentless Russian shelling, with several attacks reported throughout the day. Prokudin indicated that seven residents were injured during one sustained assault on residential areas in the early evening.
In the eastern part of the country, Russian shelling targeted a thermal power station in Kurakhove, leading to injuries of five workers and a subsequent power outage. The head of the local administration, Roman Padun, disclosed that residents were leaving the town in large numbers. Kurakhove, situated near the frontline town of Maryinka, has witnessed extensive destruction due to months of intense fighting.
Amid the assaults, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in its evening report, highlighted Ukrainian forces successfully repelling two attacks on Kurakhove and enduring multiple assaults on the nearby town of Avdiivka, which has been a consistent target of Russian attacks since mid-October. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in defending key locations from persistent Russian aggression.
