Congress leaders have expressed their desire for Rahul Gandhi to initiate a second 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from east to west, according to Congress MP KC Venugopal's statement on Thursday.
Venugopal conveyed that during a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge informed Rahul Gandhi about the opinions gathered from party workers and leaders across India, suggesting that he undertake a second yatra spanning from east to west.
The decision regarding this proposed yatra is expected to be made soon, as stated by KC Venugopal. His comments followed discussions during the CWC meeting, which covered topics such as the party's strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the disappointing performance in recent assembly elections, and the suspension of Opposition MPs from Parliament.
Elaborating on the meeting's discussions, Venugopal shared, "We discussed various issues. First is the last assembly election results. Second is the parliamentary elections of 2024 and third is the current political situation in the country, including the parliamentary issues. CWC unanimously adopted their resolution. The general mood of the CWC is to sincerely and genuinely evaluate the result of 5 state elections."
In addition, Venugopal mentioned that the manifesto committee for the Lok Sabha polls would be announced within the next day or two.
The initial phase of the Bharat Jodo Yatra commenced on September 7, 2022, from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, covering a distance of approximately 4,080 kilometers before concluding in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, in January 2023. Led by Rahul Gandhi, the Yatra traversed 75 districts in 12 states over 126 days, marking India’s longest foot march.
The primary goal of this mass movement, spearheaded by Congress, was to unite India against what they perceived as the divisive politics of the ruling BJP at the Centre. Additionally, the Yatra aimed to address socio-economic issues such as unemployment and inequality.
