Russian attacks in the southern Kherson region of Ukraine resulted in the deaths of five civilians on Sunday, according to Ukrainian officials. In contrast, Russian-installed officials in the eastern town of Horlivka asserted that one person was killed due to shelling by Kyiv.
Approximately a year ago, Russian forces withdrew from the city of Kherson, situated on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine, and the western bank of the river. However, areas in the region have experienced persistent shelling from Russian positions on the eastern bank.
The reported deaths in Kherson were a consequence of continuous Russian shelling over the preceding 24 hours, targeting both the city and the surrounding region. According to regional police, three individuals lost their lives in the shelling of an apartment building and a private home in Kherson city. Another woman died in a drone attack in a small town south of Kherson, and a second woman was killed in a town further north under heavy fire.
Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, head of the press office of Kherson's regional military administration, disclosed that gas and water supplies were partially disrupted due to the attacks, which also impacted a medical facility. He mentioned damage to the building, including broken windows.
Meanwhile, around 600 km northeast in the town of Horlivka, located in areas of Ukraine's Donetsk region under Russian control, Ukrainian shelling reportedly destroyed a shopping center and several other buildings. The Russian-installed mayor of Horlivka, Ivan Prikhodko, stated that the attacks resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to six civilians.
It's important to note that Reuters could not independently verify the reports from both Russian and Ukrainian sources. Despite denials from both Moscow and Kyiv regarding the intentional targeting of civilians in the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia in February 2022, both sides have engaged in numerous strikes on critical infrastructure.
