Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has articulated a significant initiative aimed at bolstering the welfare of gig workers within the state. Specifically, he conveyed that the state government is committed to extending a financial safety net to gig workers, encompassing those engaged in diverse occupations such as food delivery, cab driving, and autorickshaw services. The announcement, as disclosed in an official release on a recent Saturday, outlined the provision of Rs 5 lakh for accident insurance to these gig workers, underscoring the government's dedication to addressing the inherent risks associated with their occupations.
Moreover, Chief Minister Reddy underscored an additional facet of the welfare package by assuring gig workers of a substantial Rs 10 lakh health cover under the 'Rajiv Arogyasri' scheme. This health cover is designed to offer a comprehensive safety net for unforeseen medical exigencies, further underscoring the government's commitment to the overall well-being of gig workers.
The declaration came against the backdrop of Chief Minister Reddy's participation in a meeting convened with cab and autorickshaw drivers, as well as food delivery executives, in Hyderabad. During this interaction, he articulated the government's overarching commitment to extending social security measures to workers within the unorganized sectors. Significantly, he conveyed the intention to formulate and implement a policy conducive to the welfare of gig workers, emphasizing the imminent policy decision in this strategic direction.
Highlighting his proactive stance, Chief Minister Reddy pledged to conduct a thorough examination of the existing policy framework for gig workers in Rajasthan, aiming to glean insights and best practices. This, he emphasized, would serve as a foundation for crafting an effective and tailored law that aligns with the unique dynamics of the gig economy in Telangana. Notably, he committed to presenting this envisioned law during the upcoming state budget session.
In a poignant gesture, Chief Minister Reddy announced a financial assistance package of Rs 2 lakh for the family of a food delivery executive who tragically lost his life four months ago due to a fall from a building. This compassionate initiative reflects the government's recognition of the challenges faced by gig workers and its commitment to providing support in times of adversity.
To streamline the process of availing these welfare benefits, Chief Minister Reddy advised cab and autorickshaw drivers, as well as food delivery executives, to submit their applications through convenient channels. This could be done either online or physically in the Grama Sabhas, scheduled to be organized from December 28 to January 6. The multi-faceted approach and comprehensive welfare measures announced by Chief Minister Reddy underscore the government's proactive stance in fostering the well-being and social security of gig workers in Telangana.
