A fire that broke out in a subway in New York's Brooklyn on Christmas Eve, caused by an electric bike, resulted in nine people sustaining injuries, while numerous passengers found themselves trapped in the smoke-filled subway.
Videos shared on social media captured the thick smoke emanating from the subway due to the ignited e-bike, leading to chaos and panic among passengers. Some individuals were stuck inside the train as the doors refused to open, prompting others to seek alternative routes, including the stairwell.
In response to the incident, various emergency teams, including fire tenders, swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue passengers stranded in the smoke-engulfed train cars and other sections of the subway.
The New York City Transit Subway, using the platform formerly known as Twitter, informed the public that A/C trains were experiencing delays in both directions as the FDNY (New York City Fire Department) addressed a track fire on High St. Additionally, at least two trains were canceled following the incident.
The injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals, where doctors reported that their conditions were stable.
