Thirteen individuals lost their lives, and an additional 10 suffered injuries following an incident where Ukrainian forces reportedly shelled Donetsk, a city under Russian control in eastern Ukraine. Denis Pushilin, the Russian-appointed head of the Donetsk region, disclosed this information on Sunday. As of now, there has been no immediate response or statement from Ukraine regarding the reported incident.
According to Alexei Kulemzin, the mayor installed by Russia in the city, the Ukrainian forces targeted a bustling area that houses shops and a market. Pushilin mentioned that emergency services are actively engaged at the scene, and specialists are working to collect fragments from the weapons allegedly used in the attack.
It's important to note that Donetsk is among the four Ukrainian regions that Russia purportedly annexed last year, a move widely condemned as illegal by the majority of nations at the United Nations General Assembly. However, it should be highlighted that Russia does not exercise full control over any of these four regions.
