In an unfortunate incident at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur, a medical student has come forward, alleging that she experienced "sexual harassment" by an administrative official. The distressing event occurred in December of the previous year while the student was undergoing treatment for depression.
On December 17, 2023, following a medication overdose, the student was admitted to the psychiatric ward. After her discharge the next day, she reportedly visited the administrative officer, where she claims to have faced harassment in his office.
In response to the allegations, the administrative officer has been provisionally suspended, pending the completion of an internal investigation into the matter.
The institute's executive director, Gopal Krishna Pal, announced on January 9 that the accused officer would be relieved of his duties and prohibited from accessing the AIIMS campus. Moreover, the officer is restricted from leaving Gorakhpur.
To ensure a comprehensive examination of the allegations, a 9-member inquiry committee has been established. The Vishakha committee, specializing in handling cases of sexual harassment, is actively engaged in addressing this matter.
