A Nashik-based import-export engineer was detained for allegedly funding ISIS

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) carried out a significant operation resulting in the arrest of a 32-year-old engineer from Nashik, who stands accused of providing support and financing to the proscribed terrorist group ISIS. This arrest has brought to light international connections related to supporting and funding ISIS.

The individual in question, engaged in an import-export business in Nashik, was found to have transferred funds to ISIS in Syria on multiple occasions. The ongoing investigations also extend to associates of the accused across various states, although their identities remain undisclosed. Acting on specific information, the ATS initiated legal proceedings under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The accused had been under surveillance by the state police's anti-terror wing for an extended period. The investigations revealed continuous communication between the accused and a foreign entity associated with ISIS, an organization banned by the Government of India. The engineer-cum-businessman, showing signs of radicalization in recent years, actively facilitated ISIS by transferring funds to a foreign entity.

A search operation led to the confiscation of electronic devices, including mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, and pen drives, along with incriminating documents. Following interrogation, the terror suspect was formally arrested and subsequently remanded to ATS custody until January 31 by a court. This operation underscores the authorities' commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of the region.
