Expressing deep sorrow over the casualties and extensive damage caused by the earthquake that struck Nepal's western regions in November of the previous year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Friday that India is set to provide a substantial financial package amounting to $75 million for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the affected districts. Jaishankar, who commenced his visit to Nepal on Thursday, made these statements during a joint inauguration event for the Tribhuvan University Central Library and various reconstruction projects in Kathmandu, undertaken in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake, alongside his Nepalese counterpart, N P Saud.
Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar expressed India's heartfelt condolences for the losses incurred due to the earthquake in Nepal's western parts and underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi's solidarity with the people and leadership of Nepal. He conveyed Modi's commitment to providing any possible assistance in the wake of the natural disaster.
To materialize this commitment, Jaishankar revealed that he had recently communicated to Prime Minister Pushapa Kamal Dahal Prachanda about India's decision to extend a financial package amounting to Nepalese rupees 1,000 crore, equivalent to $75 million. This monetary support is earmarked specifically for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the districts adversely affected by the earthquake.
Jaishankar emphasized India's unwavering commitment to standing by the people of Nepal and contributing substantially to the government's ongoing efforts in the reconstruction process. He reiterated that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains dedicated to redefining and strengthening its relationship with neighboring countries, particularly with Nepal.
The joint inauguration event not only marked the unveiling of the Tribhuvan University Central Library but also showcased several other reconstruction initiatives that have been undertaken in Kathmandu following the devastating earthquake of 2015. Jaishankar's visit to Nepal in the early days of 2024 is emblematic of India's proactive engagement and commitment to fostering stronger ties with its neighboring nations.
