In the wake of the recent assault on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in North 24 Parganas during a raid at Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh's residence in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal Police have apprehended two additional individuals linked to the incident. This follows an earlier attack on ED members by a mob on January 5, resulting in injuries to several officers.
The assault occurred as the ED team conducted a raid in connection with an alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam. A case was subsequently registered by the police based on the complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate. Two individuals were previously arrested in connection with the case, while Shahjahan Sheikh, identified as the prime accused, remains at large.
Acting on a tip-off, the police sources revealed that the newly apprehended suspects, namely Sanjay Mondal and Ali Hossain Gharami, were hiding in the guard room of a fish farming pond near Najat in North 24 Parganas. A dedicated team from the Basirhat police district executed the arrest earlier in the day. The detainees were subsequently presented before the local court, where they were remanded to one-day judicial custody.
The state police, in response to the incident, registered three FIRs, one of which was based on a complaint from locals alleging that the ED officials had created a disturbance in the area.
In a recent development, the Calcutta High Court intervened by staying the police's investigation against the ED officers until March 31. This legal intervention adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the assault and the subsequent legal proceedings against the ED officials.
