The corruption investigation involving Singapore’s Indian-origin Transport Minister S Iswaran has become a matter of significant concern, according to a senior minister, who emphasized its substantial impact on the West Coast group representation constituency (GRC) from which Iswaran was elected. Members of Parliament in the West Coast GRC, led by Iswaran, are actively addressing critical issues like the cost of living and inequality while engaging with residents. National Development Minister Desmond Lee, overseeing part of the West Coast GRC, expressed that despite the challenges arising from the corruption case, the team has remained cohesive and dedicated to serving the community passionately since the news broke in July.
Iswaran was apprehended by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on July 11, 2023, in connection to an investigation unrelated to the ongoing corruption probe. The details of the specific allegations against Iswaran remain undisclosed, contributing to a level of ambiguity. In response to the situation, he has been placed on leave of absence, and his monthly pay has been reduced to SGD 8,500 until further notice. However, Iswaran continues to draw his MP allowance.
In an interview with The Straits Times and Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao, Minister Lee acknowledged the significant impact of the incident on the West Coast GRC, without providing specific details. Despite the challenges, the focus remains on serving residents and ensuring the continuity of essential services without disruption. The incident has prompted the GRC team to energize efforts in addressing community needs and maintaining the support residents seek.
